I Don't Miss The Snow

He was just standing there, about a foot taller than me including his old top hat.  It was so old that no one else would have wanted the hat, which is probably why it was given to him.  The scarf he had around his neck was torn and it had holes in it.  There were footprints in the snow by him.  He had a big smile on his face.  He always wore that same smile.  His body was round but his arms were skinny, practically bony, which seemed weird and disproportionate. I couldn’t understand why anyone put up with him.  I knew that he was freezing cold, and that I should probably just leave him alone, but he was just so irritating.  His black eyes stared as if tempting me to take my best shot.  One well placed swing of my mitten covered fist would probably break his crooked nose, and I wouldn’t even feel bad about it.  I wouldn't.  I knew that he wouldn’t fight back.  He'd probably just stand there and take it like a man.  I imagined him falling over and laying there while I kicked him with my snow boots.  I almost wished that he'd try to defend himself. That way, I wouldn't give my plan a second thought.  As annoying as he was, I still had a slight twinge of compassion for him.  After all it wasn't really his fault, everyone around him had made him the way he was.  Every day he would just stand in that same spot.  The same thing day after day.  And I was sick of it!  The cold stung my face as I walked up to him, my sweaty fingers clinched into fists and ready.  I'd have to be quick so no one saw that it was me.  I looked to my left, to my right, and glanced over my shoulder just to be sure no one was around.  I didn't see anyone.  I was almost there, just a couple more steps when the doors behind him slid open.  There was a burst of warm air as an old woman walked out.  She looked right at me and I slid to a stop.  Then she turned to the grinning man who raised his skinny arm to ring the bell he held between his fingers.  She reached out and dropped a few coins through the slot into the red bucket that was hanging next to the cold fat man.  He tipped his tattered top hat to her and thanked her for her generosity.  Then he looked down at me and smiled, again ringing his bell.  "Welcome to Wal-Mart... and Merry Christmas."

Google Voice

I just signed us up for Google Voice and here are 10 things that I like about it:

1. Calling our gv number sends the call to all of our phones (my cell, Lauren's cell, our home phone, and my work phone)

2. The last 4 digits of our gv number are the same as my cell number 8591.

3. I can call someone from my computer... it calls my phone (which ever one I pick) and then connects to them.

4. It transcribes voicemail messages (it gets a little confused with some words but that's part of the fun).

5. People can click on the blog and it will call their phone and then call our gv number (try it if you want above).

6. I can choose to listen while someone is leaving me a voicemail and click in to talk to them if I want.

7. I don't have to change my old cell phone number that a lot of people already know.

8. I can send people text messages from my computer.

9. If I get a call from gv I can switch between my phones by pressing "*"

10. All of this stuff is free.

We haven't used it a ton, but so far it seems pretty cool.

Mom's On Vacation

Mom left for Lovell at 6:00 this morning. She almost missed her flight, but Dad made it back to the airport, barely, in time to give her her cell phone (she left it on the bed). He ran up to her, while she was being paged on the airport intercom to get on her plane, gave her a quick hug and a kiss and then she ran like crazy. She's lucky they didn't leave her!

Dad was really nice this morning and did my hair in a top pony tail and even curled the back.

Then he rode me to school on his handle bars with Tagg in the kid seat. I think his back tire was kind of flat because it made a funny noise and it was really squashed to the ground.

School was good. I got three stars

After school, we went to a really great place called the Gilbert Riparian Preserve. We got to see a bunch of different birds, like a crane, ducks, a humming bird, and we even saw some little tadpoles. Taggart and I walked a LOT and had a really fun time.

Here are some pictures of our visit:

This cactus was fun! We didn't get poked.

Taggart and I liked to walk along this creek!

The moon's reflection was really pretty on this lake.

Dad took cool close up pictures of some plants.

I thought this was an egg... it was just a rock.

We were looking at the tadpoles, or minnows, I'm not sure which.

What a pretty sunset!

We're definitely going take Mom here when she gets back from vacation. We all miss her a lot!... especially Dad.

Messing With Sam

Last night I had the following chat with my older brother Sam. He had just installed a chat application on his Blackberry. Fortunately, I was messing around on my blackberry the other day and figured out how to do accents and upside down punctuation. (I added translation of the Spanish phrases in parenthesis) Before you read it, please understand that I consider Sam to be one of the smartest and wittiest people I have known. There are so few instances that I have successfully been able to play a trick on him. He, on the other hand, is able to make pretty much anyone believe pretty much anything. Needless to say, I am proud of myself for this conversation.

Sam Shumway: Success
Sam Shumway: You there?
Joseph: Exito!!! Felicitaciones (Success! Congratulations)
Sam Shumway: :'( (Face with tear in the eye)
Joseph: Lagrimas del gozo (Tears of joy)
Sam Shumway: Grashias (Thanks)
Joseph: ¿Ya funciona bien? (Is it working now?)
Sam Shumway: SI perfecto. (Yes, perfectly)
Joseph: Hay que cambiár el idioma al ingles (you need to change the language to English)
Sam Shumway: What?
Sam Shumway: Is there some language feature?
Joseph: Estoy teclando en ingles y lo traduzca al español (I'm typing in English and it is translated to Spanish)
Joseph: Creo que es tu bb (I think it's your blackberry)
Sam Shumway: Seriously
Sam Shumway: Sweet.
Sam Shumway: You. Are lying.
Joseph: ¿como? (What?)
Joseph: ¿Estas teclando en español también? (Are you typing in Spanish too?)
Sam Shumway: No English.
Joseph: No English
Joseph: Lo escribí en español (I wrote that in Spanish)
Joseph: Creo que cambia de un idioma al otro (I think it changes from one language to another)
Sam Shumway: Te digo algo en espanol (I'll say something to you in Spanish)
Joseph: I'll say something in Spanish
Sam Shumway: Are you messing with me
Joseph: If you could only see my face!!!
Joseph: Ja ja ja ja (Ha ha ha ha)
Joseph: That was pretty classic!
Joseph: I revel in it when I can pull one over on you!
Sam Shumway: Look at you. So proud of yourself. The only reason I was buying it was because of the upsiddr down ? And the word teclando.
Joseph: That was really fun!
Sam Shumway: Well done little brother that was almost as good as the deer heead incident
Joseph: ¡exito! (Success!)
Joseph: It feels almost as good
Joseph: If only more people had been watching
Sam Shumway: You will save thhe conversation I'm sure.
Joseph: Yes
Joseph: And send it to all of our spanish speaking kin
Sam Shumway: Well I'm going to bed. Later.
Joseph: Goodnight
Joseph: Nice work on the messenger
Sam Shumway: Thx. (Thank you)

Dear Claire,

Yesterday I saw you for the first time. Okay, I saw you before but then you weren't much more than some divided cells with a heartbeat. Yesterday, you were so wiggly and refused to hold still for the ultrasound tech. Nice work! Don't ever let anyone tell you what to do.

I'm so excited to hold you and sing to you. You're going to LOVE your older sister Grace and your big brother Taggart. They are as excited to see you as I am. You will provide some good balance in their lives. I think you're just what they need!

You're not going to believe what an awesome mom that you have. Just wait, you'll see. She's beautiful, talented, strong and she is going to love you like crazy! I don't know what I'd do without her. What a lucky girl you are to have her!

Claire, keep growing. I'm counting the days until you are born. (153 according to mom's blog).

I love you!

Your Dad
